WAH WAH WATSON

Todos conocereís temas como "Papa was a Rolling Stones" por los Temptations, "Let´s Get It On" de Marvin Gaye,"Off The Wall" por Michael Jackson, "Man´s Child" de Herbie Hancock, etc. 


En todos ellos encontramos un elemento en común, un productor, compositor y guitarrista, su nombre artístico "Wah Wah Watson".

Todos estos temas forman parte de la história del Funk,Soul y R&B, todos ellos contienen riffs de guitarra pertenecientes a Watson.

Habitualmente los riffs de guitarra dentro de estos estílos suelen considerarse menos espectaculares que en temas de rock, blues ó jazz, pero si reflexionamos nos daremos cuenta de la cantidad de riffs de guitarra que nos son familiares. 

Melvin Ragin, nacido en 1951 en Detroit ( Michigan) , a los 20 años fue requerido por la discográfica Motown para trabajar como músico de sesión para el albúm de Edwin Star titulado "Stop the War Now" (1971).

Una vez en la nómina de Motown, participó en innumerables sesiones de grabación formando parte del grupo denominado "The Funk Brothers", una formación creada por músicos de estudio para colaborar en las grabaciones de los artístas de la discográfica (The Four Tops, Martha Reeves, The Supremes, Jackson 5, Gladys Knight & the Pips, etc).

Dentro de esta formación es dónde pudo aprender las diferentes técnicas de interpretación para adaptarse a cada estilo, pero en la utilización del pedal Wah Wah es donde consiguió crear un sello propio que además le propicio su nombre artístico "Wah Wah Watson".

Como su apodo nos indica,  es un maestro de la utilización del wah-wah pedal. creando escuela en cada tema. Un dato que impresiona es que los temas en los que ha colaborado han vendido más de 100.000.000 de copias. Si,  no me he equivocado en la cantidad, cien millones.



En 1973  fue llamado a la Costa Este de Estados Unidos para participar en la grabación del albúm "Ma" de la banda Rare Earth,  en teoría la estancia estaba prevista para cuatro días, pero al final se quedó de manera definitiva siendo un habitual en la escena musical de Los Angeles.

Ese mismo año conoció a Herbie Hancock en una de las sesiones de grabación para el tema "Let´s Get It On" de Marvin Gaye, Hancock le invitó a formar parte de su banda para la grabación del albúm "Death Wish", su relación se mantiene hasta la fecha.

Posteriormenta siguió colaborando en las grabaciones de los albumes de Hancock, "Man-Child" (1975),"Secrets"(1976),V.S.O.P. (1977),"Feets Don´t Fail Me Now"(1979) y "Mr.Hands"(1980).

Entre las diferentes sesiones de grabación ha participado en gran número de tours, siendo uno de los más importantes el último que realizó Marvin Gaye en 1983.

En la década de 2000 ha colaborado con Angie Stone, Janet Jackson, Alicia Keys al igual que en bandas sonoras como "Shaft" (2000)

Además de ser un gran músico, su otra pasión ha sido la enseñanza. Junto con otros músicos de renombre como Herbie Hancock, Clark Terry y Joshua Redman ha dado clases en el Theloneus Monk Institute  y en Los Angeles Unified School.

En este segundo video de Mechell Ndege Ocello ( una muy buena bajista y cantante) , encontramos una colaboración en directo de Wah Wah Watson en un tema que creo que a los aficionados al Funky jazz les gustará.




Su discografia es inmensa, normalmente haría una selección pero como homenaje me parece más justo añadir todos los trabajos posibles.  Repasarla nos hará pasar buenos momentos si seleccionamos lo que más nos guste.
